How were you taught to define success?

My narrative of success is that people who “do the right things” are guaranteed success. If someone is suffering it is because they made bad choices or didn’t do enough to help themselves succeed. This became a hard narrative when I started to run across things in life that I couldn’t control or situations that didn’t turn out well even though I did everything “right”.
